Pinag-aaralan na ngayon ng UPLB administration ang pagdagdag ng “repeater’s clause” sa university rule on absences.
Sa iminumungkahing panukala, maaari nang hindi pasukan ng estudyante ang isang subject kung pangalawang take na niya ito o higit pa, ayon kay UPLB Chancellor Dr. Rex Victor Cruz.
“We want to save the students from further humiliation and shame. If they choose not to attend classes in their second take, it is fine, provided na natapos naman nila yung subject noong first take at sadyang hindi lang sila pinalad na pumasa,” Cruz told the UPLB Peerspective. “We want to ease their suffering.”
Sa kasalukuyang set-up ng mga courses, maaari lamang lumiban ng hanggang anim na beses ang estudyante sa lecture at hanggang tatlo sa recit classes sa mga pangkariniwang kurso, depende kung ilang oras at beses nagkikita sa isang linggo ang mga estudyante at teacher.
Ayon sa isang Math66 taker, maganda ang iminumungkahing panukala.
“Maganda po ito,” sabi ng Batch 10 BA Communication Arts student. “Kasi po sa experience ko ang daming nagtatanong anung batch ko na po or pang ilang take. Yung prof ko nga po tawag sa akin, kuya.”
Dagdag pa niya, “Eh alam ko na naman po yung lessons. So bakit pa po ako papasok ulit?”
Dadaan sa UP Board of Regents ang panukala at oras na maaaprubahan ay maaari nang simulan ng mga estudyanteng repeater na umabsent ng umabsent. [P!]

What if the reason a student failed a course was because he had excessive absences? The reason there is a maximum number of absences is that because the remaining days was the minimum number of days a student should be present to understand the course. I am assuming the rules on absenteeism is not just so there is a rule, it’s implemented for a reason. Though this may not apply to all, but mostly, if a student did not pass a course was because his/her understanding of it was not enough, hence the retake and attending the classes he/she has already attended.
No matter how much students favor this “repeater’s clause,” in the end it will be their loss. I have also experienced retaking subjects, and I still come to class, thinking it’s for my own benefit. But then again, this is just me. 🙂
